چکیده

We report observations and an analysis of the distribution of HCO + (1-0) and HCO + (4-3) emission in the central 1 kpc star forming region of M82. Comparisons are made with other star formation indicators such as the mm continuum, the distribution of radio SNR's and the molecules CO and OH. In a broad sense, the HCO + is distributed in a way similar to the CO, although there are noticeable differences in detail, including an inward displacement of spiral arm emission relative to CO. A comparison of the position-velocity plots for CO, HCO + (1-0), HCO + (4-3), and ionized gas, with orbits expected in the presence of the nuclear bar suggest an inward transfer of gas associated with star formation toward the nucleus. The HCO + (4-3)/(1-0) line ratios are comparatively uniform in the observed region, and according to an LVG analysis, reflect mean gas densities in the range 10 4 cm −3-10 5 cm −3 for kinetic temperatures in the range 20K-60K. The comparative uniformity of these conditions and the low filling factor suggest that each sampled point comprises a large number of clouds occupying a broad range of density, and possibly temperature. We briefly examine fractal type models in the context of the HCO + data as an alternative way to analyze molecular line emission in M82.

Photon-dominated Chemistry in the Nucleus of M82: Widespread Hoc Emission in the Inner 650 Pc Disk

The nucleus of M82 has been mapped in several 3mm and 1mm lines of CN, HCN, C2H, c-C3H2, CH3C2H, HC3N and HOC + using the IRAM 30m telescope. These species have been purposely selected as good tracers of photon-dominated chemistry. We have measured [CN]/[HCN]∼5 in the inner 650 pc galaxy disk. Furthermore, we have detected the HOC 1→0 line with an intensity similar to that of the HCO 1→0 line. ...

Widespread Hco Emission in the M 82's Nuclear Starburst

We present a high-resolution (∼5 ") image of the nucleus of M 82 showing the presence of widespread emission of the formyl radical (HCO). The HCO map, the first obtained in an external galaxy, reveals the existence of a structured disk of ∼650 pc full diameter. The HCO distribution in the plane mimics the ring morphology displayed by other molecular/ionized gas tracers in M 82. More precisely, ...

Tidally - induced Super Star Clusters in M 82

Using new HST imaging, we identify a large, evolved system of super star clusters in a disk region just outside the starburst core in the prototypical starburst galaxy M82, " M82 B. " This region has been suspected to be a fossil starburst site in which an intense episode of star formation occurred over 100 Myr ago, which is now confirmed by our derived age distribution. It suggests steady, con...

Peculiar Chemical Abundances in the Starburst Galaxy M82 and Hypernova Nucleosynthesis

X-ray observations have shown that the chemical abundance in the starburst galaxy M82 is quite rich in Si and S compared with oxygen. Such an abundance pattern cannot be explained with any combination of conventional Type I and II supernova yields. Also the energy to heavy element mass ratio of the observed hot plasma is much higher than the value resulted from normal supernovae. We calculate e...

Star formation time - scales in the nearby , prototype starburst galaxy M 82

The last tidal encounter between M82 and M81, some 500 Myr ago, had a major impact on what was probably an otherwise normal, quiescent disc galaxy. It caused a concentrated burst of star formation in the form of massive star clusters, which decreased rapidly, within a few 100 Myr. The current starburst in the centre of the galaxy is likely either due to large-scale propagating star formation or...
